the whole reason i started this thread is for the guys taht were contuinely bashing soccer saying how football was teh number one sport. i simply started it to show that soccer is popular even if its no in the US. as for odins post that is absolutly correct. it is an easy sport to play u dont need alot of things but ya yur also rite w/ thats how pick up football game start as wel. kids get together get a football and just begin tossing it around. so really football could be the most popular sport in the world but its not since no other countries are near as big on it as the US. i think only europe and canada are the only other countries taht have football leagues and they arent that big so there must be a reason y they dont like it as much.

I don't know of anyone who thinks that American football is the number one sport. I know people who like it a lot, though ... but I know just as many people who love soccer.

I agree about the simplicity of playing soccer. All you need is a ball and ground :P No basket, no other equipment. You can make a goal by using closely spaced trees or something on the ground. It owns :P

yes it does and no offesnse to football players i do think they are highly skilled athletes but come on? whats easier to catch a ball w/ yur feet or yur hands? hands duh. but u see these guys "catching" a soccer ball w/ there feet. hits there foot and drops rite next to there feet. i mean that takes a huge degree of skill. then to see the guys that can bend the ball like crazy around a wall to score(beckham) i mean wow. u cant find a guy in the world who has never played soccer and ask him to do taht. u could prolly find any numbskull and ask him to throw or catch a football and he could. so soccer just takes a huge degree of skill to excel at.

I never followed soccer nor played it ... but I have always admired its universal virtues ... that a pickup game can be played almost anywhere since all you need is a ball and some space ... and that people of just about any country can just join in ... it's a universal language.
And I do feel at a loss not having grown up with the sport in the U.S.

i think it is the most active sport as its constantly running. tehres no timeouts to use no 30 second play 40 second+ rest time after each play. the only downtime they get is injury goals or halftime. but then again everyone gets a halftime(out of basketball footballa nd soccer) so it is the most active sport. i played it all four years in high school and i could outrun and out endure every single football player on our team. we had to run something called teh Blitz basicaly its pure running for 19 minutes(aka hell) ill post exactly waht u had to do later on today.

the sad fact that keeps soccer from being popularized in American sports television is that it has no long breaks for commercials to broadcast.

FYI it is pretty hard to catch a pass in the NFL. Wide receivers need great speed and quickness to get open. In some cases they need to make an over-the-shoulder catch at full running speed and that is a lot harder than it looks. Also they need amazing body control to keep two feet inbounds while making adjustments to catch the ball. All this time they have to keep in mind that someone's going to lay a massive hit on them as soon as they catch the ball and they also have to hang on to it while the defender tries to strip it. Easy? I think not. Saying football requires less skill than soccer is like saying any soccer player can play in goal and be good at (*edit*- last line was swallowed up by the forum)

yeah ... apples vs. oranges.
If we want to get really petty we can say ... American football uses a ball that's not round so it bounces unpredictably ... whereas a soccer ball is round ... where's the challenge in that? A person who has control of a soccer ball doesn't have to worry about getting pounced by 16 bodies on them ... heck, they only have to pay attention to a handful of players around them and the ball ... an American football player with the ball is guaranteed to get physically pulled/pushed into the ground by the opponents.

if u could plz point out in my post as to where i said that football requires no skill? oooo thats rite i didnt. i know it takes skill for football players to catch the ball and keep there feet in bounds. but u have to understand u do just about everything w/ yur hands. the point i was trying to make was the fact that it extrodinary that someone can "catch" a soccer ball w/ there feet. i understand i said that any numbskull can catch and throw a football, i meant no offense to football players nor to take away from football playesr athelticsim. i was simply saying u through a football to a guy 10 to 1 he catches it fairly easy (no defenders or ntohin). but u throw a soccer ball to a guy and tell him to "catch" it w/ his feet, 20 to 1 it hits his foot and bounces away from him. i understand taht the catches football players make are phenomenal, but i was simply saying taht u use yur hands most often and they are alot more flexible so u can catch a football or basketball easily. football players make one handed catches all the time. that is phenomenal some of those catches they make, it takes a lot of skill and great hands. but not every football reciever can make those catches, it seperates teh great from the good. i was not saying football is a no skill no endurnace sport simiply taht it is to catch a ball w/ yur foot. as to what Xue earlier said its true, us Americans love commercials to go grab food or drinks or do w/e. srry if u thought i meant that football players have no skill.

Well I thought that line was you throwing a gauntlet to say football players have no skill. Anyway we all know you didn't mean that so we can be friends again.

oh and sharpe, wrestling is the highest contact sport available to play at middle-high school level, boxing is the highest contact sport. none of the which are retarded because you don't know how much guts it takes to go out there knowing you could get paralyzed or break something.
2/3 wrestlers break at least one bone every 2 years
|
errrrr, uhhhhhh, wrestlings fake . yes high wrestling and such is real, but im sorry, i dont see the point to a sport where the main goal is to break the others leg.... again it is the american *macho* life. I have no problem with people doing it . some of my friends do high school wrestling, but im aloud to have my opinion as long as a justify it

I'm not the fella who invented the word soccer - and neither is any living American ... so why the verbal assault?
In any case the gauntlet has been thrown so I'll strike back:
A good number of soccer games end with penalty kicks - doesn't that make the preceeding game irrelevant much of the time? I say you save the effort and skip to the penalty kicks ...
(just kidding - soccer players are superb atheletes.)
And regarding basketball. Basketball was created by James Naismith, a Canadian, while working in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first game took place in the United States, but 10 of the players of the first basketball game where from Quebec. It seems that basketball was part of both countries heritage. But if you want to be precise - basketball was invented in the United States.

canadian guy, american country..... why dont we just call it a mutually invented sport lol

u cant really compare the too sports very closely as they are too different. American football has more in common with rugby than "soccer". And I haven't watched american football all the way thorugh as its too broken up. Make a play for 30 secs thn spend 10 mins devising how to defend/ attack. repeat and add in 10 mins of comericials. i think i herd that in american football u only get to see about 40 mins of action in 3 hours of viewing.
